ACHIEVE Program at Collier Middle School

ACHIEVE is designed to empower students to experience growth and success through integrating an enriched academic curriculum, therapeutic services, and life skills training into a smaller classroom environment with limited outside distractions.

A small classroom environment, sensory-friendly seating, fidget toys, and regular breaks create a supportive atmosphere.? Our staff, including Ms. Buffy (paraprofessional), Ms. Helaine (social worker), and Collier Middle School Principal Mr. Botti, are committed to guiding each student to success. As Mr. Botti says, "We are dedicated to seeing our students succeed in their education."

?By incorporating student interests like basketball, Legos, technology, and more into projects and actively listening, we meet students where they are. Individual Student Profiles, covering academic and life skills goals, along with parent/guardian meetings, promote open communication and collaboration with families.

Academic Component

ACHIEVE uses a multidisciplinary approach to learning, incorporating multisensory techniques and project-based themes to engage students. Staff encourages hands-on learning, integrating activities such as sports, educational trips, discussions, and the arts. By blending these with curriculum-driven experiences like journaling, field trips to historic sites, and interdisciplinary projects, students gain a deeper, more connected understanding of the material, making learning both impactful and engaging.

Students also participate in physical education at the YMCA, where they practice social skills and exercises. Field trips to places like Twinlights, Sandy Hook Lighthouse, and the Vietnam War Memorial offer real-world lessons in history and geography. ACHIEVE students participate in project-based activities on European countries in World Culture and Social-Emotional Learning activities that enhance communication and social skills.

Therapeutic Component

Therapeutic support is at the heart of ACHIEVE, ensuring students receive the emotional and psychological assistance they need. A consulting Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and an in-class Psychologist provide ongoing support throughout the day. Morning meetings with speech and occupational therapy staff set a positive tone for the day, while afternoon reflection periods offer students time to process their experiences and manage stress.

In addition, the ACHIEVE Program follows the Core Values of Partnership, Perspective, Citizenship, and Reflection. Beginning with “partnership,” students and staff have worked together to build connections and practice healthy communication.

Life Skills Component

Life skills are a critical part of ACHIEVE students success. Students engage in vocational training, career research, and hands-on activities designed to prepare them for future success. Community visits and educational field trips further enhance their understanding of real-world vocational paths.

Students are encouraged to develop stress management and coping skills through social-emotional learning, mindfulness techniques, and relaxation strategies with our Social and Emotional Learning Instructor weekly.

Eligibility Collier Middle School serve students with disabilities in grades 5 through 8 whose needs cannot be met within public school and may benefit from extra academic and therapeutic support.
